Here we are, back home six weeks following the most successful of the two US
east coast tours and sad news to report.
Ed has decided that it is time to retire.
We shall miss him greatly. His contribution to Fourum will make him impossible
to replace. Were pretty sure we shall find another Baritone, but the
chances of finding a Baritone who can add the dimensions to our group that Ed
did seem very remote. A magician, who would amuse our audiences on and off
stage. A guitarist who could always perform his solo spot when there no piano
in the hall! Always good for a funny story, even though one of his Irish jokes
against his own nationality offended a member of the audience in America a
couple of years ago.
Thanks, Ed.
USA Tour 2003
What a trip! At times we were overwhelmed by the welcome we were given. We
renewed all friendships and made so many more. You may remember we were
struggling to fill one date between Williamsburg, VA and Hamden, CT. We did it,
thanks to Chris Copley of the Hagerstown Herald Mail, Maryland and Debbie
Schyllander of Williamsport Retirement Village. We even got local TV coverage
of that concert! We mustnt forget Avis Tossells invaluable efforts
as our accompanist. It was a delight working with you, Avis.
An immense privilege away from the concert stage was our visit to Morys
in New Haven, CT, where, thanks to Charles Wakerley, we not only had lunch but
were allowed to sing The Whiffenpoof Song to members present. Our
regret was having to turn down their invitation to join them for a drink!
In-between concerts we indulged in a lot of sight seeing. Jeff and Ed had a day
out with the Dahlonega Ridge Runners. Roger was feeling off colour
and missed the day out. Thanks to Joe Wilson Jeff had Joes bike (Honda
Gold Wing) for the drive up to Cherokee, NC and Ed rode behind Ralph Prescott.
Thanks guys. A great day. On that day Keith, Avis (our accompanist) and
Bill went along with Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir to Atlanta. Some of us took
another day out with SMVC to Chattanooga, Tenn while Jeff and his wife Shirley
were taken by their hosts, John and Betty Lane Yates, into Alabama and Pine
Mountain, GA.
Once we had left Georgia for Virginia we all drove the seventeen mile long
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in both directions, (north and south), the
Shenandoah Skyline Drive in one direction (north), visited Harpers Ferry,
MD and spent a day in New York City where we travelled on the Staten Island
Ferry in both directions and the Empire State Building in both directions (up
and down).
The most amazing trip, involving three internal flights. In total around 3,000
miles air and road in the USA. Many thanks to yall.
Upcoming
Not a lot at the moment. As it happens, thankfully, following Eds
decision. We are back in Louth, Lincolnshire on September 17 for Allegro
Appassionato.
As with previous newsletters thanks for taking the time to read through. Please
keep in touch, we like to hear from you. We hope to have our Guest Book back on
line soon, so if visiting the site for the first time (and its working),
please sign in.
Jeff, Keith, Roger and for the last time, Ed.
